Community - History

Harrisburg is the nerve center of Pennsylvania. Located in the beautiful valleys of south central Pennsylvania, it has attracted people from all areas of the world.

In early seventies Islamic and cultural activities were on individual levels and confined to a few families. Later on, when the number increased some sincere Muslim Elders decided that an organization should be established wherein Muslims could gather and continue to perform religious duties and pass the values to the children.

With these noble aims the Islamic Society of Greater Harrisburg (ISGH) was established in June of 1975. After more Muslim families arrived in the area the ISGH Constitution and By-laws were adopted and the organization was registered as a non-profit organization with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1977.

As the Muslim community grew a former Christian school was purchased in Oberlin Gardens Steelton and turned into a Muslim Community center for the purpose of conducting prayers including Jumuah, Taraweeh and EID prayers, teaching Islam to our youth and Adults, and holding community activities. Masha-ALLAH with Allah's blessings the community out grew the facility and after a couple of failed attempts to purchase another place, Allah again blessed the community with the purchase of one of the Oldest Church complexes in Central Pennsylvania belonging to the Catholic Diocese in April of 1996. The main sanctuary was converted into a Musallah and the attached school building and gymnasium are being utilized by the community. We are now trying to build a strong community with a full-time School.
